内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to analyze the directions sports psychology is heading, based on its historical development. The psychology of physical education is the foundation of sports psychology in Japan. We can divide the history of sports psychology into four periods, according to its publications. The first period was 'The Beginning', from 1924 to 1941. The second was'The Dawn', after World War Ⅱ as the educational system in Japan was changed to the American style. The third was ‘The Establishment’, in which the psychology of physical education, as a pedagogical field, gave rise to the psychology of sport as a part of sport science. Now we are in the fourth period 'The Accomplishment'. In this period, there are three areas of psychology which address the realm of physical activity. The psychology of physical education is an accepted subject in upper level education. Sports psychology focuses on the enhancement of athletic performance. The psychology of health and exercise concentrates on the psychological issues in daily health. Recently, we tend to specialize, to name each field more specifically, like the psychology of coaching. The future problems will probably be differentiation and integration of these three areas. To date, there has not been enough research into the relationship of sports, mental processes and brain activities. The psychological problems in athletics should be studied using neurological points of view. Today, research by the methods of clinical psychology are also growing. We can certainly expect the incorporation of these two fields into sports psychology to lead us in new directions in the future. | |||||
