According to statistics, more than half of Japanese Olympians were and are members of corporate sports clubs. The statuses of the members vary. Some are full-time employees and others are contract-based workers. In some sports, the latter are considered as professional players. From the company’s financial perspective, contract-based players are cost efficient, considering that they do not need life-long salaries equivalent to those of full-time employees, even though the higher annual salary is needed for contract-based (professional) highly skillful top players.
